12. Izu-Oshima Monument

Izu-Oshima, an island near Tokyo, is the first Sister City/Sister Island relationship with Hawaiʻi County. Begun in 1962, and active to this day, Oshima has gifted cultural items to Lili`uokalani Gardens. This monument stands near where an Oshima torii spaned the path to the tea house in the 1970s. A stone lantern graces the Turtle Island in Waihonu.

A monument to the first Sister City relationship was given by Oshima in 1992, the 30 year anniversary.
