12. Bicentennial Garden & Lions Clubs Legacy

A stone setting workshop in a regional conference of the North American Japanese Garden Association got this project off the drawing boards and into reality. Lions Clubs in East Hawai`i earlier built a small pavillion with benches made from Trex lumber and pipes in 1987. The pavillion overlooks the stone arrangement in the meadow. In 2017, new stones were set on a small hillside across a gravel path from those benches, which were replaced by stone benches built on the same footprint. The stone viewing area was designed by Takuhiro Yamada of Hanatoyo Landscape in Kyoto. Construction crew was organized by David Tamura Landscape of Hilo. Dedication was part of the Lions Clubs District Convention attended by more than 250 people, each of whom added a white stone to the viewing area.
