11. Shichi Go San Stone Arrangement (7-5-3)

Located in the meadow in the southern quadrant of Liliʻuokalani Gardens is this large arrangement of stones. Representing the ages at which children reach a certain level of maturity (7-5-3), the stone arrangement represents a subliminal invitation to children to come and play in this meadow. Designed and installed by Kazuo (Engyo) Nakamura in 1976 as his gift to Hilo, the arrangement utilized locally quarried stone moved and set with rollers, tripod and pulley. Mr. Nakamura had the help of two brothers from Honomu.
